Frequently Asked Questions
How PassItOwn works, from posting your first item to arranging a pickup.
Two things to check:
Free accounts can have up to 15 active listings at a time.
To free up space, mark items that have been collected as "Picked Up" — this archives them and removes them from your active count.
Upgrading to Supporter removes the limit entirely.
When creating a listing you choose how people can respond:
You can change the mode by editing the listing before anyone has claimed or expressed interest.
Open the listing and tap the edit icon (pencil). You can update the title, description, photos, assigned Groups, claim mode, and pickup details.
Marking an item as claimed or picked up is handled separately via the status buttons on the listing detail page.
When creating a listing, choose "Save for Later" instead of "Post Now". Drafts are visible only to you under Activity → My Listings → Drafts filter.
Open the listing and tap "Mark as Picked Up". This archives the item, removes it from the active feed, and notifies the person who claimed it.
If no one has claimed the item yet you can still mark it as picked up to remove it from the feed.
Free accounts are limited to 3 photos per listing. Supporters can add up to 10.
Listings are archived automatically after a while so old items don't clutter the feed:
Archived listings aren't deleted. Find them under Activity → My Listings → Archived, then set the status back to "Available" to re-list it and restart the clock.
Go to Activity → My Listings, find the item, and click "Make Available Again" — this cancels their claim and reopens the item to everyone else right away. You don't need the other person's cooperation.
Claiming (or being chosen) doesn't share your phone number or email. Instead the site automatically opens a message thread between you and the owner so you can coordinate pickup directly.
Once you've handed off the item, either person can mark it picked up from the listing or from Activity.
Activity has two tabs:
A Gathering is a temporary session for adding several people as friends at once when you're together in person — a family reunion, a party, a neighborhood event — instead of trading friend codes one at a time.
Everyone who joins can see who else is there, spot mutual friends, and bulk-add each other into a Group in a couple of clicks. The Gathering itself is temporary; the friends and Group you add from it are permanent.
1. Go to Friends and click "Start a Gathering."
2. Choose "Fixed time" (1, 2, 4, 6, 12, or 24 hours) or "Until I turn it off" (unlimited, capped at 72 hours as a safety limit).
3. Optionally add a password so only people you tell can join.
4. Click Create. You'll land on the Gathering page, which shows a join code and a QR code others can scan.
Go to Friends → "Join a Gathering," then either:
If it's password-protected, you'll be prompted for the password after entering the code.
On the Gathering page, check the box next to each person you want to add (or select all), then click "Add People."
Choose an existing Group to place them all in, or create a new one on the spot. Anyone who already left or was blocked is automatically skipped.
It's how many friends you already have in common with that person, so you can spot people you're already connected to before deciding who to add.
Gatherings with a fixed time also end automatically once it runs out.
Groups are the circles of people you share with — for example Family, Friends, or Neighbors. Every listing is assigned to one or more Groups, and only the people in those Groups can see it.
Three Groups are created automatically when you sign up: Family, Friends, and Neighbors. You can rename them, create new ones, or delete ones you don't need.
Open the Groups page, pick a Group, and add a friend to it — or add them to a Group directly when adding them as a friend.
Go to Groups and open the Group you want to change. From there you can rename or delete it.
Deleting a Group does not remove the friends in it — they'll remain in any other Groups they belong to.
Adding a friend to a Group only gives them access to listings that are assigned to that Group. You still need to assign each listing to the Group:
Open the listing → Edit → update the "Share With" groups to include the new Group, then save.
Existing listings are not automatically shared to newly added friends.
Share your unique Friend Code (found on your Profile page). The other person enters it under Friends → Add Friend. Codes can be refreshed if needed.
Once you send a request the other person must accept before you appear in each other's friends lists.
Go to Friends — any pending requests appear at the top. Click the checkmark to accept or the X to decline.
Open the person's profile → tap the ⋯ menu (top right) → select "Hide My Listings From User". Your items will no longer appear in their feed.
You can reverse this at any time from the same ⋯ menu. This is softer than blocking — you can still message each other.
Open the person's profile → tap the ⋯ menu (top right) → select "Block User".
Blocked users cannot see your listings, message you, or find you in search. You will also stop seeing their content.
To unblock, find their profile and select "Unblock User" from the ⋯ menu.
Pick a reason — spam, inappropriate, harassment, scam, or other — and add any details that would help our review. Reports go to the PassItOwn team, not to the person you're reporting.
You can do both — report it for review, then block right away if you want to protect yourself in the meantime.
Messaging is started from the item detail page — tap "Message Owner" on the listing. If the button is missing:
Go to Settings, update your name, then Save. Display names must be under 50 characters and are checked to keep the community appropriate.
Not yet — the feed doesn't have a keyword search box. Use the category filter chips at the top of the feed to narrow it down to one category at a time.
Go to Settings → Delete Account and confirm. Your account is hidden right away and permanently deleted after 30 days. If you change your mind, sign in during those 30 days and choose "Restore my account".
Once deleted, your listings, the groups you own, and your profile are permanently removed. Messages you sent stay visible to the people you sent them to, shown with your display name, and they can no longer reply. If you're asked to sign in again first, that's just a security check before a destructive action — sign back in and try again.
On the login page, click "Forgot your password?" and enter your email — you'll get a reset link. This only works for accounts created with an email and password; if you signed up with Google, sign in with Google instead.
Go to Settings, where you'll find fields to update your password and your email address. You'll need to re-enter your current password to confirm it's really you. This option doesn't appear for Google accounts.
